Project Abstract |
Early-life chronic stress can produce long-lasting changes in hippocampal development, which may predispose to the onset of cognitive or other psychopathological disorders. Neuromodulators released in response to stressors, especially corticotropin-releasing hormone, have been shown to influence the growth and pruning of hippocampal dendrites. Furthermore, a novel model of early-life chronic stress used by the Baram lab leads to cognitive decline in middle-aged rats, as well as reduce the number of apical dendrites in CA3 hippocampal neurons. My project aims to elucidate the role of CRH and other mediators in the mechanism of this cognitive decline, by characterizing their expression in the hippocampus of rats following early-life chronic stress. |
