Residency Programs in Internal Medicine with Research Tracks
The internal medicine research tracks below are not exhaustive but do list the majority of excellent training programs across the United States. Feel free to look for others. Virtually all programs indicate that you should inform the program of your research track interest PRIOR TO YOUR INTERVIEW to ensure the most information is available at the time you visit. Moreover, most of the programs have a limited number of such slots. The American Board of Internal Medicine offers a six year combined residency fellowship program leading to board certification in internal medicine and fellowship certification in a subspecialty following three years of clinical training (two years of internal medicine and one year of fellowship) and three years of research. The program is listed on most sites as "ABIM research track". General information can be found on the website for the American Board of Internal Medicine.

The following very good programs do not appear to offer research tracks but instead offer only three year intense clinical training leading to board certification in internal medicine. If you are interested in any of these programs, be sure to ask about research opportunities and research time allowed. These programs are listed here as they are premier postgraduate training programs in internal medicine and should offer such tracks; unfortunately, as far as their websites indicate, they do not.
