GYMS and WORKOUTS
Aaah, Orange County, home of The Beautiful People (that is, if you watch a certain WB show). Consequently, there are countless places to work out here (or, for that matter, get plastic surgery). Among med students, the most popular local gyms include
Anteater Recreation Center (the ARC): Located at the south dead end of the east Califonia Ave, across the street from Graduate Student Housing, the ARC is #1 choice for students. Specific advantages offered by the ARC include:
• FREE (even during the summer),
• open weekdays from 6am to midnight
• situated conveniently close
• usually not crowded before 5pm
• fantastic, brand-new, huge facilities, including
2 gymnasiums (with basketball, volleyball, badminton, hockey , soccer), a fitness lab(various cardio and weight/ strength training), racquetball/ wallyball courts, an Olympic size lap pool, elevated jogging track above the main gym, lit outdoor sports fields: softball, soccer, football, hockey, tennis, baseket balland a rock climbing wall.
24-Hour Fitness (locations on campus in University Town Center, or in Irvine, Newport, San Juan Capistrano, and Laguna Hills). Students interested should check-out long-term plans, family rates with roommates, or signing up in early September to save money. Some students prefer 24 Hour Gyms since they offer
• even more flexible hours than the ARC
• multiple locations for students living off campus
• no extra-charge• for classes (although there is, of course, a club charge)
• tends to be a little less crowded at peak hours
Crawford Hall: This is a smaller version of the ARC. It is extremely convenient for an early morning or lunchtime sweat. Advantages include
• Again, its FREE
• Super close (just past Med Café, across California Ave)
• Great facilities
• Olympic size lap pool
• Tennis courts
• Fields for jogging and informal sports
CLASSES
Classes especially highly recommended by your big sibs include swing dancing, yoga, step, sculpt and relaxation at the ARC, kickboxing and yoga at 24-Hour, Beginner’s Yoga at Yoga Path (UTC), and swing dancing at Tia Juana’s (off the I5 at Sand Canyon, for a $5-7 cover charge on Tues and Weds nights). Below are highlights of other fun classes offered at the ARC this Fall. Fees range from $0-190, but average about $30 a class. Many classes meet once or twice a week, usually during the weekdays, late mornings to evenings. Pick up an ARC brochure for specifics. INTRAMURAL SPORTS
Intramural sports are structured leagues and tournaments designed for the “everyday athlete.” All the activities are divided into different divisions of skill and competitiveness, so you can choose your own level of play, from “competitive,” “intermediate,” “recreation,” “open,” and “co-rec” (most med students play at the recreational level). Intramural sports offered this Fall include Speed soccer and 7-on-7 soccer, flag football, volleyball, 3-on-3 basketball, tennis singles and team tennis, Ultimate Frisbee, and the Golf Shamble Tournament. To sign-up, teams must pick up an entry form from Campus Recreation Services (2nd Floor, ARC) and pay the entry fee (usually around $50 for the entire team) by Tuesday, October 7th at 1pm. To guarantee your spot in the league, you must also attend a mandatory Manager’s Meeting for your sport. For more info, pick up an ARC Brochure, call the Intramural Sports Hotline at 824-1490. If you are signing up alone without a team, just stop by Campus Recreation Services to fill out a Free Agent List, choose the sport, level, and schedule you want, then attend the Manager’s Meeting. AND HAVE FUN!!!!
